Post subject: How to use key generation?
I'm beginning to use Data Services. I have a input text file which I would like to insert into database. I designed a job as follows:
text file (source) --> query --> template table
I would like to add Key generation because I would like to add primary surrogate key for my table. How do I add this key generation into this job?

Hi,
Add the Key_Generation transform between the query and the target.
Source -> Query -> Key_Generation -> Target
Open the Key_Generation transform and provide the information.
Table Name : Target Table for which you want to generate the keys
Generated Key Column: And the column name here
Increment Value: By default it is 1
OR
you can use key_generation function in the query transform itself as mapping for the field. The input parameters are same as above.

Thanks. The problem is that there is no column for surrogate key in the text file (source). There is no target table in the database so my job is generetign the target table from template table. In key generation it only provides datastore and proposes to choose a target table. But there is none. So my intention is to create new column in query object and the use this as a surrogate column. I thought that I could use key generation object to generate surrogate using this column?

A surrogate key field need not to exist in the Source (Text File). And you can use use key_generation transform for the template tables. I tested it.
My suggestion is,
Flat File -> Query ->Key_Generation -> Template Table
Drag all the fields from source to query, and a new field in the query transform for SURROGATE KEY and map it NULL here.
Then in Key_Generation transform, manually type DatastoreName.TemplateTable. And you can see the column name for key in list of Generated key column. If you have any problems, save the dataflow and do it.

You can do it with template table too. I have edited my post. If you have not read it. Then here it is.
Flat File -> Query ->Key_Generation -> Template Table
